1. What is identity ? [Back to The Top]  
  Identity is the set of physical and behavioural characteristics by which an individual is uniquely recognized.  
     
2. Why do we need an  Identity? [Back to The Top]  
  An identity is important in order to enable us distinguish one person from the other and to be sure that we are dealing with whom we say we are dealing with

Do we need to manage the identity of an individual or Organisation? [Back to the Top]

 
  Yes, because a situation could arise where the actions of a person in the past, present and future will be related to a person’s identity. We manage identity so that changes can be tracked as required and it is possible for an individual to prove his identity dependably.  
     
4. What do we mean by Identity Management?[Back to The Top]  
  Identity Management System comprised of one or more systems or applications that manages the identity verification, validation and issuance process.  
     
5. Why do we manage Identity in Nigeria?[Back to The Top]  
 

We manage identity so as to:

  • ensure the safety and security of our citizens
  • control, use and protect individual Identity  against misuse  and fraud
  • Provide the structure for regular update of the information and records of citizen.
 
     
6. What is a National Identity Database?[Back to The Top]  
  This is the central store of personal information. The database will serve as a single source of identity information storage and retrieval for the country using biometrics and unique number for the enrolment of each individual in the database.  
     
7. What information may be held by NIMC? [Back to The Top]
 
  These include:  
 
  • Personal information i. e names, date of birth, place of birth, gender, disability, residential address and other addresses
  • Identification information i. e photograph, signature, fingerprints and other biological data (biometics). See question 13
  • Residence reference numbers such as ID number, insurance, immigration, passport, drivers license numbers, etc.
  • History i. e. relationship with others such as parents, spouses, etc & their records
  • Registration & ID card history covering date of application, modification, particulars for Multipurpose ID Card, etc.
  • Validation information such as personal identification numbers, password, question and answers for identification
  • Records of provision of information i. e. particulars of occasion information on individual’s entry has been provided, persons information are provided and why
 
     
8.  Will my information be given out without my consent ? [Back to The Top]
 
 

The NIMC Act 2007 provides that no person or corporate body shall have access to your information except with the authorization of the Commission and your consent.

However, the Act sets out a number of different agencies to whom your information will be made available without your consent. They include the SSS, EFCC, ICPC, Nigeria Police etc.

 
     
9.   What should I do if I am a victim of identity fraud ? [Back to The Top]  
  Report immediately to the nearest police station or to the Commission.  
     
10.   What Personal Identification Number? [Back to The Top]  
  A private series of numbers that a user knows that are used to increase confidence in a user's professed identity.  
     
11.   What Personal Identiy Verification? [Back to The Top]  
 
A physical artifact (e.g., identity card, "smart" cad) issued to an individual that contains stored identity credentials (e.g., photograph, cryptographic keys, digitized fingerprint representation) so that the claimed identity of the cardholder can be verified against the stored credentials by another person (human readable and verifiable) or an automated process (computer readable and verifiable).
